God is Not Your Chia Pet!

This past week I did something which I thought was a leap of faith in complete obedience to God. The action itself is likely insignificant to what others have done, but for me this was a significant act of obedience in my faith walk.  Immediately I felt a great sense of accomplishment, I heard from God and was obedient and it felt amazing. While I didn’t quite expect that the Heavens to roll back and the voice of God to announce his joy in my obedience, I did expect that the good feeling that I felt initially would persist at least through the day. I thought that this good deed would trigger a series of other events that would unleash God’s blessings in my life, or at least I would have a good day! Instead, the rest of my day would be considered less than enjoyable, there were issues at work which I didn’t anticipate, a door that I had been praying for suddenly slammed shut, a major project at work essentially failed, and a series of other events happened. I thought to myself, “Why today of all days? Why would my obedience to God be rewarded by such a bad day?” Then I began to think to myself why I felt a sense of entitlement, that God is required to do anything else for me after giving His only Son so that we could spend eternity with Him. I kept thinking that I don’t deserve anything else from God, and that level of expectancy was unwarranted. The amazing thing about God is that though we don’t deserve anything else from God, He still promises that He will bless and reward obedience! In Malachi 3:10 God says, “Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this, says the Lord Almighty, and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.”  God doesn’t owe us anything, in fact everything we have is His, so giving Him tithe is simply giving him a tenth of his possessions, despite this reality God still says that if we test Him by being obedient He will pour out more blessings than we can store. So the reality is, God will honor my obedience and He will bless me. The blessings may not be financial or material, but God will be faithful to my obedience. My issue was an issue of timing, I expected that my obedience would reap an immediate harvest. The act of sowing seeds is not a quick process, to the contrary planting and harvesting is a very time consuming process. One can plant a seed and have to wait up to a year to see the slightest signs of the that seed coming to life, however when the plant has fully grown the final product is so much more significant when compared to the small seed from which it originated. Our obedience to God is like a small seed that is planted, we nurture and care for that seed and in due time our seed will bear a product which is much more impressive than the seed itself. Unfortunately we have developed a Chia Pet expectation of God, we think that must be able to see immediate results from our seeds, and that harvest should come in the exact shape we expected. God acts in His own timing and His ways are higher than our ways, our frustrations arise when we think that God should act according to our timing and our desires. Continue to be obedient to God, continue to plant seeds in your life, and I guarantee you that God will be faithful and there will be a harvest, however don’t expect that the harvest will be chia pet timing or in the shape of your favorite cartoon character lol.
